In a statement to those gathered, Mr Hayduck cited the need for audio visual archives everywhere " to celebrate this day and rally together with others across the world to trumpet the value and importance of these archives ". He noted that the theme of the 2009 World Day "Our fading Heritage – we can save it" "is not just about the past – it is about saving both our legacy collections and the born digital – these were some of the challenges .. addressed in this FIAT conference " .

Also included in his statement was the message of outgoing Director-General of UNESCO Mr Koïchiro Matsuura to the FIAT conference delegates, in which he said: "They (audiovisual archives) can be saved before they reach this point of no return". Mr Hayduck confirmed FIAT’s will to fully support this global goal.

UNESCO announces New Logo for World Day

UNESCO in association with the Co-ordinating Council for Audio Visual archives, marked the 2009 day with the announcement of a new official logo for this World Day. This followed an open competition, adjudicated on by UNESCO and members of the CCAAA. See http://www.pia.gov.ph/wdavh2009/

The new logo will be used to market and promote the UNESCO World Day in all official celebrations.

This year, they recorded a full day’s output from TVNZ’s oldest channel, TV ONE onto Digibeta tapes.

TV Slovenia broadcast the programmes “Dalekozor” about the history of Slovenian television and about the development of media.

In cooperation with Youth Centre and Association of Youth’s Friends in the town Litija, they organized workshops for the children about films, about TV archives, with a presentation of film materials about Litija carneval in 60-ies, 70-ies, 80-ies and 90-ies and organized a visit of Television and TV archives.

In cooperation with Regional archives in Maribor TV archives prepared a video of industrial gigant in Maribor “Hidromontaža”. The film materials from the archives are incorporated into the video. The video was part of a presentation at the exhibition in Maribor on the 27. October.

Cambodia ,Phnom Penh

Since 2007, the date of the first celebration of the World Day, the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre has offered each year, in collaboration with UNESCO, a day of meetings and reflections around a question peculiar to audiovisual archives in Cambodia.

The 2009 day is devoted to the Cambodian Sound and Musical Heritage. This beautiful promotional flyer was produced to promote the event which included screening on a giant screen of several documentary films about the Cambodian Sound and Musical Heritage along with a series of lectures and recordings.

Brazil

The Federal Senate of Brazil presented an exhibition to celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, including audio excerpts from five speeches delivered in plenary sessions of great relevance to the recent history of Brazil. Exhibitoin to run from 27th through to 30th October, available to the public. The audio documents were retrieved from analog recordings generated in the 1960s and were stored in digital systems, where they can be safely preserved. The exhibition is organized by SSCODA - the Undersecretariat for Digital Conversion of Audiovisual Collections (CEDOC Multimídia), the unit in charge of preservation of the Senate audiovisual heritage. SSCODA (CEDOC Multimídia) thus reasserts the proposals contained in the Declaration of CHURUBUSCO, signed in Mexico in 2005, at the 3rd International Seminar of Sound and Audiovisual Archives.

La R.T.I.

FIAT/IFTA

FIAT/IFTA renewed its call for all Television output to be recorded on this year’s world day for the preservation of the audiovisual heritage.

FIAT/IFTA is committed to the principle of making the contents of television archives as widely available as possible for study by the academic community. It is clear from academics that one of the things they would value most would be the ability to study recordings of complete and uninterrupted days of output from the past and to compare the output of different broadcasters, both within and between nations. This is not the sort of material that has usually been preserved by broadcasters and only rarely by those few national archives which deal with television material.

FIAT/IFTA uses the occasion of the UNESCO World Day for the Preservation of the Audiovisual Heritage, to call upon broadcasters, national archives and academic institutions throughout the world to make plans to record, preserve and, wherever possible, make available for study, all television output from this year’s World Day, 27th October 2009.

This call is an initiative of the FIAT/IFTA Television Studies Commission.
