Last 26th-28th October, FIAT/IFTA, Ina and AIBD, the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, organised jointly the first Asian seminar on audiovisual archives in Beijing, hosted by SARFT, the Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For the first time in its history, FIAT/IFTA brought together in Beijing Asian and Western media managers. That major international event served as a forum for issues, concerns, and major developments in the audiovisual archive sector for Southeast Asia.
The main theme of the Conference was "Audiovisual archives : a challenge for today, benefits for tomorrow".
Key issues that came out of this conference were : how to deal with the fragility of the film, audio and video materials that constitute the audiovisual historical heritage of the first 50 years of television programming ? How to migrate this invaluable material to contemporary formats ?
FIAT/IFTA was represented by Emmanuel Hoog (Ina), Edwin Van Huis (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) and Dan DiPierro (CBS News).

The first day focused on the challenges and strategies faced by broadcasters and archivists.
Mr Tian Jin, the Chinese Vice-Minister of Information, opened the conference and delivered an interesting keynote speech about the necessity of preserving the audiovisual heritage. It set the scene and the tone of the conference.
Then, Emmanuel Hoog provided an overview of the main challenges faced by archive managers and public authorities in the session "Political, economical, cultural and educational issues of broadcast archives preservation".
In the session "Case studies on setting up strategies", Edwin Van Huis and Dan DiPierro presented the archival strategies set up by their respective organisations.
Finally, Emmanuel Hoog pointed out the necessity of cooperation through international associations such as AIBD and FIAT/IFTA.
Led by Ina and CCTV experts, the second day sessions focused on the techniques required to implement a migration plan as well as on research enabling the automation of transfers : types and rythms of decay of film and video materials, digitisation procedures and formats.
The European PrestoSpace project illustrated the session "Industrialization and technological research".
The third day offered a stimulating and fruitful discussion on content management between Edwin Van Huis, Dan DiPierro and Jean-Luc Vernhet.
Finally, all participants enjoyed the generous hospitality offered by our Chinese hosts on the occasion of a tailor-made visit to CCTV archives. The seminar, both informative and friendly, was a resounding success and offered an unique opportunity for Chinese and South East Asian broadcasters and Archivists to share their insights about the preservation of the audiovisual archives. The collaboration between FIAT /IFTA and AIBD has been fruitful and we have now to build on this joint working and cooperation for mutually beneficial activities in the future.
Although a very intensive schedule, all participants managed time to relax and visit Beijing and its surroundings (Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall) !
