FIAT/IFTA World Conference
Madrid, 27th-31st October 2006
"Saving and sharing our audiovisual heritage.
The age of television archives"

Call for papers

You are invited to send your proposals to Sue MALDEN by 31st May, at the latest

Theme

“Saving and sharing our world audiovisual heritage - The age of television archives”, this is the theme for this year’s conference. This will enable us to celebrate both the UNESCO World Audiovisual archive heritage day (27th October 2006) and the birth of television in Spain (28th October 1956).

We are inviting presentations on the following topics:

  • Open Archives : legalities, access, charging ; preparing content i.e. catalogue for the internet ; new partnerships for opening up archives
  • Rights : legal/copyright changes that are likely to come in the future ; how the net will be used to present content to different users in future ; possibility of tracking use of content on the internet ; case studies for freeing up rights
  • Spanish archive scene (50th anniversary)
  • Evaluation of asset management systems ; business cases
  • Future of archivists : changes in the role of the archivist as technology allows more time to be freed up to enable them to use their knowledge of the collection to create new content and to re-present it
  • Training for archivists
  • Endangered archives : “everything is relative”, where are we now, really ?
  • Potential users of media archives and what are their needs?

We want to include presentations demonstrating the holdings of archives from all over the world. This could include a continuation of the presentations launched in Paris on the many endangered archives represented in FIAT, and the progress made since, if any – this is in keeping with FIAT’s approach for support for media archives to the United Nations and UNESCO.

Plenary sessions & Workshops

There will be main plenary sessions in the mornings and workshops to continue the plenary sessions’ themes and to cover each of the FIAT Commissions’ area of responsibility, in the afternoons.

The presentations in the plenary will either be a panel discussion on the indicated theme or a paper (max. duration 20 minutes) with questions. The workshops will be more informal and circa one hour duration with lots of interaction with the audience.

Proposals

Please contact Sue Malden sue.malden@btopenworld.com with any proposals for either a plenary or workshop.

Indicate if there is a specific session that you want to contribute to with a one paragraph summary of your proposal, by 31 May 2006.

We hope to be able to air the conference on the internet, so consents from speakers will be required.
