P&P Commission in Czech TV with a very senior manager - Director of programmes
- Petr Koliha
The Programme & production Commission had the pleasure of meeting in Prague at the end of May. Our perfect host was Vit Charous, Head of Czech Republic TV Archive.
Those attending were - Chair: Sue Malden, Billie Segal, Birgitte Rathsach, Con Bush, Dominique Saintville, Karl Maier, Roberto Rossetto, Vit Charous. With guest, Josef Veith of GLS (Sponsor of New Media Award)
Apologies came from Ruth Stifter and Alicia Conessa who were unable to attend.
We welcomed Lieve Van der Straeten to the commission, taking over from Phillippe van Meerbeck as the VRT member
The Commission were very impressed with the visit to the Czech TV Archive, especially to the News section. Thanks to Vit Charous and his team for all their hospitality and support given to our meeting.
We also met with the Director of Programmes for Czech TV, Petr Koliha who welcomed us to their company and country (see photo of Commission with Petr Koliha)
The main objectives of this commission meeting were to shortlist the entries for the Television award in preparation for the final selection in Antalya. There were 28 nominations for TVAA. Two of the three nominations from RCTV, Venezuela were withdrawn; of the three nominations from Bulgaria, one was a new media nomination and the other withdrawn; one of the 2 nominations from INA was withdrawn.
The Commission discussed the points made about the award by retiring EC member, Jyrki Stolt i.e. that all entries should be viewed by the General Assembly and that the prejury should be more objective. It was agreed that it was not practical to insist that the entire GA viewed all entries. This was not normal practice in other award giving bodies. However, the use of the pre-agreed assessment criteria proved to be most helpful in focussing the decision making process.
For the selection process the prejury was divided into 3 groups, each one was allocated an equal number of programmes to view (taking account of length of each prog). Also, to ensure objectivity, it was agreed that the representative from each company did not sit in the group that judged the entry from their company or country. Each group, in turn, reported back to the full group an assessment of all the programmes that they viewed and gave a shortlist of 2 progs with the reasons for their selection (measured against the selection criteria). The full group viewed the 6 nominated programs as part of this process. There was then a secret ballot to vote in preference ie 1, 2, 3, for the final shortlist of 3 programs. The decision was unanimously in favour of:
There were 8 nominations received for the New Media Award - 3 internet; 2 DVD-ROM; 1VHS; 2 CD-ROMs. The whole prejury assessed the entries. 2 were merely new media copies of TV programs. The final selection was USA- The Sound of...(SWR)..
Josef Veith, the sponsor said how impressed he had been by the whole selection process. He felt that he had learned a great deal from the whole process. His company would arrange for VHS and DVD copes to be made of the short listed programmes for distribution and showing at the Conference.
We then turned to our next piece of work- the planning of content for the World conference in Antalya, Turkey .What topics should be included, who would be good speakers etc
Ruth Stifter is working on FIAT/IFTA's 25th anniversary. Ruth would appreciate any information, video or photos that are related to FIAT history.
The P&P Commission are also working on a survey of members and their needs of FIAT/IFTA - so watch out for more news!
