The content managed by the ABC's Archives and Library Services represents the nation's most important and comprehensive media record of Australia's political, cultural and social history. Archives and Library Services has a central role in ensuring that the history contained in the content is preserved and accessible to current and future generations.
Archives and Library Services provides for the capture and management of content across all ABC platforms for re-use, sale and legislated requirements, as well as delivering research services and access by program makers to information and content.
As Head Stannus' key national responsibilities will be: the development and provision of a centralised, cross media, client-focused service to ABC program and content makers for the ABC's collections of audio, video, film, text, music, sound effects, stills and graphics; the digitisation of content provision, storage and management, and the implementation of a new organisational structure which aims to better position the activities and functions of Archives and Library Services in the future cross media, digital environment. Stannus will also oversee the Sydney collocation of the Archives and Library Services units housed in the ABC Gore Hill and ABC Ultimo premises, into a single custom designed facility in Ultimo.
Through these activities the ABC aims to: increase its usage of content across all ABC platforms leading to more efficient expenditure on content creation; increase the amount of content used and accessed by ABC program makers and third parties, and increase revenue flow into content creation from exploitation of rights in content.
Robyn Watts, the ABC's Director of Content Rights Management said, "The ABC remains committed to the continued provision of a robust, dynamic and fully operational Archives and Library Services. I am confident that the appointment of Mary Jane Stannus as Head will ensure a successful outcome for all stakeholders going forward."
Stannus was formerly Acting Head of Archives and Library Services during which she was responsible for a departmental restructure within Archives and Library Services which delivered improved cost efficiencies to the ABC. Prior to that Stannus was National Manager Archives and Library Services (1998 - 2001) and Manager Television Archives and Library Services (1994 - 1998).
Stannus is a member of the Australian Library and Information Association and has held executive positions in professional information organisations.
