PARIS: CO-ORDINATING COUNCIL OF AUDIOVISUAL ARCHIVES ASSOCIATIONS (CCAAA)Report: Meeting March 7 -8 , 2002
The members of CCAAA met again in Paris for the second time. The venue was the UNESCO Headquarters. The meeting was organized in an excellent way by Joie Springer, UNESCO and chaired by Sjoerd Kooperman, IFLA. A historical meeting because two non European associations participated for the first time: The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) and The Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA). Sam Kula represented AMIA and Ray Edmondson SEAPAVAA. Both are well-known to audiovisual archivists worldwide because they have been working in the field of audiovisual archives for years. I recall that I met Sam Kula for the first time in Rome, Italy in 1978. He then represented the National, Film, TV and Sound Archives (NFTSA), Ottawa, Canada. I went to the meeting in Rome as an observer to see what kind of association FIAT/IFTA was. I also recall that INA's member Dominique Saintville was very active at the meeting - many years ago. And Ray Edmondson has also participated at FIAT/IFTA. I met him for the first time in Bogensee, Germany 1994. So far about the memory and the history of dedicated persons still active in the field. Why was the CCAAA set up and why is it important to meet once a year? - In order to coordinate different international activities and to see if we can work together on matters of common interest. On the agenda : Apart from exchanging reports of the main activities of the different associations, new projects were mentioned. What about a seminar for IASA, FIAF and FIAT/IFTA located in the Caribbean in 2003? No objections to the plan as long as we all know the host and the contact person for the seminar. What about working with new training materials for the archives? And how to improve the relationship with UNESCO in the future? What is the attitude of manufacturers to keep up the production of materials for years and what is the reason to maintain the production of old tape formats and machines: The market is the answer and the market is the archives. The next meeting in 2003 will be chaired by FIAT/IFTA and the venue will be Paris. Minutes of the meetings were taken by Cathrine Lacken. The Covenor for the meetings is Kurt Deggeller Tedd Johansen |
