FIAT/IFTA members worldwide need support. The aim of the association is to assist not only the richest of the rich within a country but the poorest of the poor. The last group is a challenge to the members who contact FIAT to gain more wealth for the company. Dr.Peter Dusek, the President himself, has started a debate on the subject. My comment is: Excellent, Mister President. We need more support from the rich television stations in the USA and Europe.
The office of the association situated in Oslo, Norway, is on speaking terms with the members worldwide. The Board of FIAT has decided to improve the standard of the Web Site. We want to collect as many as possible of the documents and papers presented at seminars and conferences. And this is the answer to the poorest of the poor: Information is available on the Web Site. My personal experience with forwarding written documents to members is not positive. Out of print and Forgotten is the answer to those who want to educate themselves in a special field.
But it is not easy to get hold of the papers presented at the seminars. Some lecturers are of the opinion that they will only give information during a meeting and repeat the message at next meeting. And some are not interested in producing a document at all. Anyway we need both: Seminars and conferences to inform members . Personal contacts are very important. Later on we can search the Internet for information forgotten after the presentation.
To get in better contact with TV archives in Latin America we have begun to translate the documents into Spanish. Active in this are Jesus Anderez, ETB: Euskal Telebista and Amira Arratia: Television Nacional de Chile (TVN). Gracias, Amigo y Amiga!
Who visits the Web pages, you may ask? The statistics we use are not complete or sufficient for a proper evaluation. Anyway I will make an attempt to interpret the figures. Two countries are dominating the list so far: United States of America and Norway. And how many members do the two countries represent? USA: 10 and Norway: 6 . In Latin America Argentina is at the top of the list of searchers. The total figure of visitors is about 7223. The measuring started on July 24, 2001. The figure for so called: unknown is about: 1203 - and the big question is who are the 1203 visitors who we do not manage to identify?
I have asked members about the issue and some are very active searching on the Web Site weekly because they do not get access to information elsewhere. And as you all recall: The archives have to fight to get attention in many companies. We must also take in consideration that many private companies are searching on the net to get new clients. I get weekly emails from companies in USA telling me how to be rich quickly.
FIAT will continue to work with The Information Bank: Web Site and the set
up seminars and conferences. I am very impressed by the standard of the members
who give lectures. They are professional. We have a President who is a crusader
in the field of archival matters. He travels everywhere and inspires people to
take care of the collections. Annemieke de Jong, Branko Bubenik, Lasse Nilsson,
Eva-Lis Green, Steve Bryant, Amira Arratia, Sven Allerstrand, Sue Malden - are
all doing an excellent job, just to mention some of the most active ones. I
was very proud to represent FIAT in Mexico City when I listened to FIAT's members
presenting documents to 200 Latin Americans. I was happy, to be honest ,to know
you all - amigos y amigas! I love you all!
Take care.
