The first FIAT Regional Seminar in Moscow organized by Branko Bubenik, the Chair of our Training Commission and Anatoly Vystorobets, Director of Gosteleradiofond, was a big success. It illustrates the new FIAT policy of enlarging our regional activities in a very impressive way. In the training camp of the Moscow Academy of Science in the suburbs of this huge city, there was a well organized meeting of more than 70 participants from 25 countries - mainly from Russia and the former Soviet Union; so we had participants from Kasachstan, Georgia, Kirgisistan, Turkmenistan, Usbekistan, etc. But also our colleagues from the Baltic countries were present. These colleagues were offered the choice of Russian or English language and the quality of the speakers was indeed very high: From Sue Malden, Alain Goossens to Branko Bubenik, Vittorio Sette to Alfredo Tropa. Not only half of the FIAT Board was present but also many Russian specialists.

The excursion to the historical center of Moscow and also the archives was very impressive and I think this was one of the most successfull training seminars we ever had.
Therefore it was not a gesture of politeness when we coopted our colleague Anatoly Vystorobets into the Executive Council. This was possible because Serge Roth left the Board after the General Assembly in Vienna and a Chair - which was occupied until then - was now available for Anatoly Vystorobets.
Even though FIAT co-financed this event, the lion's share of expenses and organisation costs were covered by Gosteleradiofond, i.e. the lodging for more than 60 colleagues and a dozen speakers, the transport from and to the airport as well as the Moscow excursion.
Fortunately, we will continue in this direction. Coming up in November is the big regional meeting of the Central American archive world in Mexico - together with IASA. The participation of the deputies of our FIAT colleagues from Tunesia and Zambia allows the assumption that the next year and the year thereafter planned seminars will be organized as well as this one in Moscow.
The importance of this seminar for the Russian hosts was demonstrated by the participation of high-ranking representatives of the political and media world.
A warm thank you to Branko Bubenik and Anatoly Vystorobets!
Finally some words to Moscow itself: In the middle 80's I was in this city for the first time; it was totally cut off from the Western World. At that time telephones were not available, there were only very few cars on the street and there were only few shops. Now Moscow has turned into a metropole like Los Angeles, London or Beijing and one drowns in traffic, the historical part of the city shines in new splendor, churches have been re-constructed and even in the suburbs a busy nightlife begins at midnight.
But what hasn't changed is the unbelievable hospitality that of course has to be sealed with a glass of vodka: "na zdarovje" and "do zvidanija".
FIAT will hopefully hold regional seminars in the future in Moscow.
Best regards
Peter Dusek
FIAT President
