For the first time the archivists of Estonian Television got an opportunity to visit a modern archive abroad.
The idea for organizing a training seminar for archive staff of ETV was kindly offered by our colleagues from the archive of YLE TV in Finland during the FIAT/IFTA Seminar that was held last year in Tallinn. The training seminar took place this year on May 17-18 at the archival premises of YLE TV with the support of FIAT/IFTA and was attended by six people from our archives.
The training seminar was very well organized. Our hospitable colleagues had organized for us, in addition to the lectures related to every job within an archive, a very interesting and informative tour through the whole archive premises of YLE TV and thus we got a thorough and comprehensive introduction to the activities of a modern archive in a TV company. We were especially impressed by the effecient organization of the archive work and, not to mention, the storage area and the system of lending the archive material. Among other things we found it very useful to learn about the documentation and computer cataloguing, different possibilities to use digitized photo collections and issues related to the sales of archive materials. The survey about the on-going Digital Archive Project of YLE was also of interest to us.

Although the seminar lasted only for two days, we arrived back home very satisfied with the knowledge we gained. Without any doubt the whole event proved the importance of this kind of seminar to the archivists from lesss developed archives and offered a lot of information that can be used in the development of the work of such archives in the future.
