THE USE OF MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE IN NEW TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS Moderator: Tedd Johansen Speakers: Lasse Nilsson, Archive Production Manager (SVT, Sweden), Secretary General FIAT/IFTA Finn-Ulrik Berntsen, Researcher Archivist (NRK, Norway) The purpose of this session is to update information on ways to reuse archive material in new productions. The session will contain plenty of video illustrations. MAKING THE ARCHIVE PROFITABLE: ARCHIVE PROGRAMMING Lasse Nilsson will talk about how to reuse old and forgotten television and pre-television archive holdings. Issues: How to inform your organization about the treasures stored in your archives, How to select to programmes and non-transmitted material, How to handle the material from a technical point of view, and finally - How to market this kind of programming to the audience. DISTRICT PRODUCTIONS AND REUSE OF ARCHIVAL MATERIALS The the title of Finn-Ulrik BerntsenÇs lecture implies that the audiovisual archives hold material of considerable value for programming also is to be found in decentralized part of a broadcast organization. He will talk about reuse of footage in new television productions organised by district offices of NRK (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation). SELECTION AND PRESERVATION OF TELEVISION MATERIAL Moderator: Tedd Johansen Speakers: Sue Malden, Corporate Affairs Manager (BBC, UK), Chairman of the FIAT/IFTA Programming & Production Commission and Vice President of FIAT/IFTA Ingrid Briseid, Senior Research Archivist (NRK, Norway) This session aims at giving you some ideas about how to handle your historical material and transmitted programmes in connection with new productions. RECOMMENDATIONS ON SELECTION FIAT/IFTA Recommendations on selection and preservation of television materials will be introduced by the FIAT/IFTA P&PC Chair Sue Malden. NRK SELECTION AND PRESERVATION POLICIES Ingrid Briseid will give you information about the preservation and selection of old news programmes transmitted by the NRK. Screenings of tv-productions will be an important part also of this session. |

He will try to discuss the influence of technology changes on personnel requirements for TV-archives and the standardization of personnel models (great, middle and small TV-archives). Jyrki Stolt will introduce an audiovisual archivist basic training seminar in Helsinki this fall, hosted by YLE. |

Media Business Unit, USA) ORF speaker - not yet decided (ORF, Austria), Member of FIAT/IFTA Documentation Commission This session will try to give different aspects on the strategies for digitisation of audiovisual archives as well as advancements in technical solutions that have direct implications on present archive holdings. THE DIGITAL FUTURE AT NRK Tedd Johansen will try to give an overview on the present digitisation projects at the public broadcaster NRK in Norway. METADATA PROJECTS IN NRK May Norfeld will present the different metadata projects on the area going on at NRK. CONTENT MANAGEMENT FOR TELEVISION PRODUCTION AND ARCHIVING Rainer Kellerhals gives an overview over the terminology used in digital media asset management and the typical workflows to be supported by these systems. He will also present the requirements for a generic baseline software and hardware architecture for digital media asset management systems and outlines the requirements for mass storage systems in audio and video broadcast applications. There will also be implementation examples from broadcasting organisations and an outlook on future developments in digital media asset management. 24 HOURS OF DIGITAL ARCHIVING Marjo Viita has been working with the implementation of the archive system for the new 24 hours news channel at Sveriges Television. She will provide us with her þhands onþ experience of this project, pointing out the pitfalls and the implications of this project for the rest of the companyÇs archiving activities, providing a 24 hours access text and movingi images archive facility. MEDIA ASSET MANAGEMENT Some of you might have heard Philip Page on this topic at the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Chile or at the AMIA Conference in Montreal last fall. This is an update and expansion of these presentations and since we know the development in this area is rapid, there will be a lot of news. WIDESCREEN - A NEW FORMAT IN BROADCASTING The new aspect ratio of 16 by 9 in television is already here and it will affect the archiving of television material.
