Our distinguished Dutch member Robert Egeter van Kuyk of the Netherland's Information Service has had some thoughts that he has formulated in the form of small poems. Here is one of them:

FAREWELL TO BRAZIL

Silence and sun live in the courtyard
Of the Carmelite Convent.
The light clings at the painted faades
In the streets beyond its walls.
Like lazy cats, men and women drift
From shade to shade -
Time knows no hours, no years.

At the end of a long corridor, in the vestry
We see a heavy table on turned legs:
They sat at it when they surrendered,
Sweating Dutch to polished Portuguese.

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER

My fellow members!
The venue in September is Washington D.C. Do not forget the month, the date and the place; Washington D.C., USA. I would appreciate to meet you all "over there". "... East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet..." Rudyard Kipling wrote in "The Ballad of East and West". We have to prove again that this poem‚s negative attitude must not come true. FIAT/IFTA is a community of people from different cultures and societies with a common goal to work together in the field of television and film and sound development. National meetings within your own country are of course important. Anyway I would suggest that you all bring your friends with you to the FIAT/IFTA conferences and meetings and organize a national meeting within FIAT/IFTA. "...East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet..." Do what you can to make his words and attitude a policy of the past.

The venue is Washington D.C. And here the technology of the West will meet the challenge of the East: USA and Europe in a friendly and open competition in the field of new technology, preservation of film and sound and videotapes. An exchange of information to put you in a better situation later on when you are fighting with your budget and councils and managers to make some progress in your work.

"...US is ten years ahead of Europe in the development of CD-ROM, digital transmitter technology and the use of computers..."; an unofficial source made this statement recently. True or not true? Come and see for yourself. Make your own judgement. "... When I told you some years ago about the digital technology and the rapid change to digital, you all laugh..."; a statement made by the new director of the Technical Department of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation Arild Hellgren to television technicians. And the future for trasnmission of television is interesting he said to the same audience after a visit to the technical exhibition in Las Vegas called "NAB 95".
Compressed data and transmission: What about that? The cost of transmission of digital signals and the use of satellites for news transmissions? What will be the future? And what about the quality of the transmitted programmes? Can the archives copy the transmitted data and be sure that the quality will last for at least some centuries? Who knows? Questions to be asked and subjects to be talked about. The products will always be sent to the library or the archive to be stored for future use. And it is our responsibility to be sure that the programmes are to be reused in some years - I hope.

The future poems might be about EAST/WEST and the common interest in making the right decision about the future. The archives will face a new challenge in the future: How to store and reuse materials made on compressed data and transmitted on compressed data at qualities that differ from transmission standard to viewing standard.

But what about me - I am running an archive where we have just made the radical change from U-Matic HB into Betacam SP? We have not forgotten you. The past and the present: FIAT/IFTA can "... not look back in anger..." - not rejectning the present problems for archives around the world. We cannot just say as a famous person said in the film "Gone With the Wind": "... Frankly, my dear, I don‚t give a damn..." -Rhett Butler‚s statement.

My fellow members: See you in September in Washington, D.C.

The President
Tedd Johansen
