What's happening in the FIAT/IFTA Programming & Production Commission?
What is the P&PC in the first place?
Apart from being the newest (1993) working body within FIAT/IFTA, the aim with
this Commission is formulated in the Policy given below;
- Formulating and regularly updating documents and recommendations on archival
and preservation policies, including guidelines.
- Establishing guidelines on the presentation of archival material in new
programmes.
- Organising sessions at FIAT/IFTA gatherings on worldwide developments in
the television industry with special emphasis on their relevance to libraries
and archives.
- Organising sessions at FIAT/IFTA gatherings on the use of archival material
in new programmes, including where possible contributions from the programme
makers themselves.
- Organising the FIAT/IFTA Television Archives Award for the best use of
archival television material in a new television programme.
- Maintaining contact with the FIAF Commission for Programming and Access
with a view to joint activities.
- Encouraging and monitoring co-productions based on archival material between
FIAT/IFTA member organisations.
At present the P&PC is working on a document called "Recommended Standards
and Procedures for Selection for Preservation of Television Programme Material".
Headings are: Scope of Material, Technical Considerations, Selection Procedures,
Selection Criteria, Selection Recommendations. The last heading is divided into
Programme Categories with a discussion for each on what selection criteria should
be applied to an individual programme for retention. Today there is a draft document
that probably will be presented at the FIAT/IFTA Washington Seminars in September
this year.
The P&PC has also commenced working on Guidelines for the use of archive
material in programming. That document is planned to be followed by a videocassette
in the FIAT/IFTA series of Audiovisual Archiving Training Cassettes.
During the spring the P&PC will be busy preparing a shortlist of programmes
nominated for the Television Archives Award. Every
member of FIAT/IFTA can nominate a programme transmitted during 1994. Nominated
programmes should be examples of innovative and creative use of archival television
material specifically. Voting for the winning programme takes place at the
Washington Seminar.
