WORKING GROUPS INSTEAD OF COMMISSIONSJYRKI STOLT, chairman of the Documentation commission, reports from some discussions within the Commission concerning WORKING GROUPS INSTEAD OF COMMISSIONS?The Documentation Commission members have often discussed on the basic function of Commissions. Basically all Commissions were established to work within some quite specific area as related to archiving audiovisual records. The borders were more or less clear at the beginning: documentation was programme documentation, technical matters were programme carrier and stock control matters, training was archivist training, selection was programme selection, etc.. Today the situation is quite different. There are no clear borders any more. I do not know the English version of the Finnish expression "poikkitieteellinen", but "horizontally scientific" might illustrate it. All items are mixed, overlapping all commissions are "horizontally scientific".This fact and many experiences during last years led us thinking of new ways to work actively on all FIAT/IFTA fields. We found out that the present commission organization is totally out of date, old-fashioned almost an antique way of working. What would be the solution? Our opinion is that instead of fixed Commissions the Executive Council should every year decide on certain working fields in connection to archiving, and nominate working group leaders to collect relevant people - and to do the job. A working group lives as long as its nomination lasts, or as long as the work is completed.
