WASHINGTON -95.

The General Secretary STEVE BRYANT has the following to say about WASHINGTON '95.

-The 199S FlAT/IFTA Seminar, which will be part of a joint conference held with the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA) and the Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), will take place from the 17th to the 20th of September l995 in Washington D.C., USA.

The venue for the conference will be the Key Bridge .Marriott Hotel in Arlington and I visited the hotel briefly in November. both to see the facilities and to meet with representatives of the other organizations involved in planning the Conference.

Sunday 17th September will he for registration, a meeting of the Executive Council in the morning and open meetings of our commissions in the afternoon. The evening will see a joint reception for all three organisations in the hotel. Starting on the Sunday will allow our members from outside the United States to arrive on Saturday l6th. thus taking advantage of cheaper air fares and giving time to recover from any jet lag. Of course, arriving on Sunday 17th will also be possible, as the main part of the Conference will not begin until the Monday.

Monday 18th of September will be a full day of joint sessions with IASA and ARSC on the subject of rights in all its aspects, which will take place in the hotel.

Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th will both be full days of sessions for the individual organizations with FIAT staying in the hotel and the other two organisations using facilities at the Library of Congress. All sessions will be open to all delegates.

The conference will formally end on Wednesday, but there will be an organised tour of the Library of Congress on the Thursday, which will be optional. The idea of concentrating all our business into fewer days and leaving a brief and optional tour to the end is experimental but comes in response to requests from our members. We hope it will provide you with more flexibility when it comes to your travel arrangements without detracting from the usual pleasures of a FIAT conference. We also hope that there may be a tour arranged for one of the evenings of the week. Of course, all these arrangements are provisional at present and may be subject to change.

As for the hotel, it is very good and its conference facilities are first rate. The rooms are very comfortable, with TV and all the usual facilities and the hotel has a heated indoor swimming pool a gym and a sauna, a ground floor restaurant and a top floor restaurant and a lounge/bar with splendid views over the city.
It is situated by the Potomac river and Georgetown, a good area for shops and restaurants, is just across the Key Bridge. The area is safe and well served by roads and underground It is on the main route in from Dulles International Airport. The taxi ride took about 20-25 minutes and cost in the region of -USD 57. The centre of Washington is within easy reach by taxi, public transport, or, as I did it, on foot. I'm sure we are going to enjoy a very fine conference in Washington.
