NEW SMPTE RP 103:
HANDLING AND CARE OF MAGNETIC TAPE FOR TELEVISION
From LARS GAUSTAD, of The Media lab,
NB Rana, Norway, and a member of the FIAT Technical Commission, the following
has arrived:
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has recently published
an updated version of their recommenued practice (RP 103) providing guidance
for professional users concerning care, handling, transport and storage of
magnetic media for television use. The work has been done by the "Working Group
of the Television Recording and Reproduction Technology Committee", and is
meant to be a guidance to technical operation managers, archivists, technicians
and other users of the media involved.
It is considered to be the first major compilation of good practices for
use and storage of videotape. The recommendations in RP 103 do take into concern
the fact that a television archive is much to be considered as a lending library.
The recommendations are supported by all major tape manufacturers, including
the Magnetic Industries Association of Japan. I feel that the RP 103 will prove
useful as a tool to revise your practices within your archives and suggest
that you get hold of a copy. Unless you can get a copy of SMPTE Journal Vol
103 Oct 1994, where you besides the RP also will find a tutorial on the work
leading up to the recommendations, it is obtainable from
SMPTE, 595 W. Hartsdale Avenue,White Plains, NY 10607-1824, USA.
